He questions if "true AGI" is even achievable in our lifetimes and warns that the industry might be stuck in a "local maximum trap," chasing profitable but incremental gains instead of a true breakthrough.
One predicts a paradigm shift within half a decade. The other suggests the real prize might be perpetually out of reach. This isn't just a friendly academic disagreement. It’s a divergence that points to the very core of the economic models driving the biggest technology race in modern history. The central question isn't just "What is AGI?" but rather, "What is AGI for?"
The Semantics of a Superintelligence
Before we can analyze the timelines, we have to look at the definitions, because that’s where the goalposts are constantly moving. For years, the AGI meaning has been a nebulous concept: a machine that can perform any intellectual task a human can. It’s a philosopher’s dream and an engineer’s nightmare. Altman’s rhetoric leans into this grand, civilization-altering vision. He’s selling a singularity, a moment after which the rules of human progress change forever. It’s a narrative that justifies a colossal burn rate and a valuation that hinges on capturing the entire future.
Masad, however, sidesteps the philosophical debate entirely by introducing a more useful, economic term: "functional AGI." He defines this not as a conscious, human-like mind, but as a system capable of autonomously completing verifiable tasks. His argument is that the economy doesn't need true AGI, says Replit CEO. We just need something that works well enough to displace labor. It's a far less romantic vision, but it's one that's measurable and, more importantly, investable on a shorter timescale.

And this is the part of the analysis that I find genuinely telling. The debate shifts from philosophical to financial. The only concrete, contractual definition of AGI I’ve seen comes from a report on OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft. Their agreement apparently contains an AGI clause (defining it as a system capable of generating up to $100 billion in profit), after which the terms of their relationship would fundamentally change. Suddenly, AGI isn't an abstract intelligence; it's a performance benchmark. It's a number on a balance sheet. So, are we really debating the nature of consciousness, or are we just watching two companies with different business models use language to frame their respective markets?
The Local Maximum Trap
Masad’s most potent critique is the concept of the "local maximum trap." For anyone who has worked with data models, this is a familiar and frustrating problem. It’s like trying to find the highest peak in a mountain range while you’re stuck in a thick fog. You climb until you can’t go any higher, and you declare victory, convinced you’ve reached the summit. In reality, you’re just on a small foothill, and the true peak is miles away, hidden in the mist.
This is a powerful analogy for the current state of AI development. The industry has found an incredibly profitable foothill in Large Language Models (LLMs). By scaling up compute and training data, companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta have achieved remarkable results. But experts like Gary Marcus and Yann LeCun are increasingly vocal that this path—simply making the existing models bigger—has its limits. LeCun stated we may be "decades" away, noting that you can’t just assume more data and compute will solve the core problems of intelligence.
I've looked at hundreds of corporate strategies, and this pattern is classic. A company finds a profitable niche and dedicates all its resources to optimizing it. The quarterly reports look fantastic. The stock price climbs. But all the while, they are missing the fundamental innovation that will eventually make their entire model obsolete. They are building a faster horse-drawn carriage in the decade before the automobile is invented. Masad’s argument is that the immense economic value of "functional AGI"—about 80% of the way there, to be more exact, good enough for most tasks—creates a powerful disincentive to fund the risky, decade-long research needed to find a completely new path to true AGI. Why search for a new mountain range when the foothill you’re on is made of gold?
Follow the Capital, Not the Calendar
When you strip away the rhetoric, the conflicting timelines for AGI begin to look less like scientific predictions and more like financial instruments. Sam Altman’s five-year timeline isn't just a forecast; it's a necessity. OpenAI’s entire model is predicated on a breakthrough that justifies its massive capital expenditure and world-changing valuation. He needs AGI to be just around the corner. Amjad Masad, running a more conventional (if still high-growth) software business, can afford to be more pragmatic. His company profits from the current state of AI, the "functional" version that helps developers write code today. The AGI debate, then, is a proxy war for capital. The timeline you publicly endorse seems to correlate directly with the scale of the checks you need to cash. It’s not about when a machine will wake up; it’s about when the next funding round closes.
